USS Accord fiction has a history almost as long as the ship itself. A good portion of the crew has always been made up of literary types. Our Captain has a long bibliography in the computer trade press, our founding Executive Officer is a copy editor for the Linux Journal, and a couple of our regular contributers are English majors.
Commander Mike Shappe, former publisher and editor of "What Does This Button Do?" started the Accord Fiction project in 1992. Mike's original vision was to create a huge, connected story in the same vein as "Babylon 5." Initially the most active participant in the project was then LtCmdr Doc Kinne, Chief Science Officer. Others soon came on board. It became a tradition to publish the stories worked on the previous year at USS Accord's Watkins Glen Weekend in October.
A couple of years later Mike moved to St. Paul, MN to continue and enhance his Internet pusher duties. Editorial duties fell then to Mike's protoge, Doc Kinne. Doc's editorial philosophy differed from Mike's in that Doc didn't believe it was practical to setup a Babylon 5 type arc for the entire set of Accord Fiction and he was more interested in trying to reflect the reality of the club within the fiction itself. The result has been an effective mix of the two as Accord Fiction has attempted to track the tumultuous reality of the club and Mike's massive linked stories have become the best loved of Accord Fiction.
